Back to My Roots
Procrastinating’s my middle name. Writing a blog has been on
my list for the past 8 years. Only now I find the time and dedication to do it.
Anyway, my first entry will be on my trip to Dabu, Meixian (China). This trip
was planned for the whole family (my mum’s side) to visit our ancestral home
back in China. A total of 15 of us went on this trip including my grandma who
is usually reluctant to set foot outside the house, but seeing that this is to
visit her relatives she obliged.
The
whole journey took us a total of 12 hours to reach Dabu (Ancestral village); 4
hours of flight from KLIA to Guangdong Airport, an hour flight from Guangdong
Airport to Meixian and a 2 hours bus ride to the hotel and in between a lot of
walking, running under the rain, waiting and waiting. The bus ride from the
Meician Airport to Dabu was my worst bus ride ever. It was as though I was put
in a baby’s rattler for an hour! Well I guess it wouldn’t have the “ancestral”
feel if the journey wasn’t that rough.
At the airport we were greeted by my granduncle’s son who
hired an entire bus for the tour. Party in the bus yo! I was feeling really excited
already, the whole family travelling together in a bus and in a foreign
country! Our first meal in china was ‘lau su pan’ (pronounced in Hakka) which
taste like our Malaysia’s “lou shu fun” but not as good of course. Their
noodles are hand-made (can tell from the texture and look of it) smoother, not
much minced meat but very fragrant. They must have used pork oil cause the dish
was simple but quite tasty. We had it for breakfast for the next 5 days, enough
to kill my appetite for “lou shu fun” for the next 5 years. Apparently, noodles
and ‘lou shu pan’ is a staple for their breakfast in the whole of Dabu.
